( Telephony )

If you have a business office that needs to make long distance phone calls to other states or countries, you know how expensive these calls can be if you're using regular telephone providers.

Today's modern technology has developed a much more economical alternative for businesses that rely heavily on outbound calls.

What is Vonage?

Vonage is a commercial voice over internet protocol or VoIP network and broadband services provider. In the US, it is also popularly referred to as Vonage broadband telephone company. Vonage has become the leading provider of VoIP services in many countries because of its aggressive marketing strategies.

How a Business VoIP Phone Works

A VoIP phone uses your internet connection instead of a regular telephone line. The system converts your phone call into data which is then sent through the internet similar to chatroom or email communication. The connection and voice quality is higher than that of a regular phone.

As a Vonage subscriber, you get to choose any telephone number to be your primary, as well have the option to add additional virtual lines. To use the service, you need to purchase a Vonage VoIP router or a phone adaptor. You also need adequate broadband connection and upload speed to prevent any lags. You can plug the routers with phone ports to any internet location.

Your business VoIP phone bears the country code, area code and number of another country or state. Even if you're at a different location, you can make calls as though you are at your phone's area code location. For instance, your phone may have a New York area code, but you can use it in California for outbound calls. This saves on toll charges if you need to make many calls to New York, as they will be considered New York local calls.

The only setback is that not all area codes in the country may be accommodated as primary lines by Vonage.

Types of Vonage Business VoIP Phone Plans

The Vonage business VoIP service packages start from forty dollars per month. Some Vonage business packages offer limited number of free minutes, after which a few cents are charged per additional minute. For ten dollars more, you can have unlimited local and long distance calls.

Every now and then, Vonage also has special promotions such as the first-month-free offer, and free international calls to specific locations in the world.
