What is a PMP?

A growing number of companies need to plan, organize and implement projects in order to develop new products, streamline their procedures, or simply to perform more competitively in their respective industries. Projects are usually intricate and tedious in nature, involving many complicated steps.

To get the job done in a timely manner, companies employ project management professionals or PMPs. PMPs demonstrate expertise in managing entire projects. From start to finish, PMPs make sure that the whole project achieves desired results with greater efficiency and at less cost.

Like professionals in other fields, a PMP can add to his credibility by being trained and certified. This requires you to take and pass the PMP certification test, which is considered one of the most challenging certification tests. On the other hand, it is also one of the most rewarding because it is globally recognized and preferred.

Requirements for PMP Certification

The amount of training you need to be eligible to take the PMP certification test depends on the number of hours of your project management experience and your educational background. The PMP training program is mandatory if you only have a high school diploma and no college units. However, PMP training is optional if you already have a college degree, although it would help to do a review course in lieu of taking a full course.

After finishing your PMP training, you can take a four-hour certification test. The test measures your level of knowledge and proficiency in project management, through a battery of multiple-choice questions.

You can apply online with the Project Management Institute. You will be given a testing schedule and venue. PMI will also send you a credential handbook and Code of Ethics as well as other useful references to help you in your review. If you wish, you can enrol in review sessions to help yourself become better prepared for the exam.

Passing the exam will entitle you to PMI membership as well as other privileges enjoyed only by certified PMPs.

Where to Take PMP Training

While there is no PMI-sponsored training, you can take PMP training at a reputable school or training center. Some universities also offer the training course, or you can also take it online.

The whole PMP training program is about 35 hours and is expensive. But the expense should be looked upon more as a worthwhile investment to help your career grow by leaps and bounds.
