Synopsis of Single Black Female

Single Black Female is a musical and romantic comedy dealing with the ups and downs of being a single black female who is also educated and middle-class.

With 15 segments, the story revolves around the lives of the two single females who reflected how being an educated, middle-class black woman is considered a socially disadvantageous trait. The two single black females are engaged in a dialog, as they recall their own frustrations about their misunderstood images. The pair has difficulties in finding dates, and are often caught in nightmare dates. For instance, they each recall how well-meaning relatives question them about being single, and also cite choices as to which white men they prefer to date.

As the dialog progresses, so do the scenes change and show how each of them go through their nightmare dates, especially as they try arranging dates on the internet.

The play debuted in California in 1998, and played at two more places until it finally reached Broadway audiences in 2006. It was written by a university professor whose field of specialty is African American culture and literature.

Critical Analysis

Single Black Female has its comedic moments, but it also tries to present contrasts between existing paradigms and the actual characteristics of the two ladies in the story.

While both women possess a high educational and work achievement, they seem to be unlucky in finding the right dates partly because of how people regard their social standing. In short, being a woman of their social status is not in fashion. The two women struggle to win respect for themselves.

In spite of its racial theme, audiences other than just single females will identify to a great extent with the play's two main protagonists. For instance, single Mexican women will feel with the characters regarding dominance of racial make-up over achievement.
