Suffolk County History, Geography and Demography

Suffolk is one of twelve original counties of the state of New York. It occupies the southeastern part of the state, with one end split into two peninsulas while three other sides are surrounded by water. Suffolk has ten towns, a national laboratory, and several airports.

The county has about one and a half million residents, mostly Italian-Americans. There are about half a million Suffolk County households, with median age at thirty-six years and annual median income at around sixty thousand dollars. The county ranks at number twenty-one among the nation's list of the most populous counties. Yet, crime rate in the area is lower than national average, and most of the county's residents are gainfully employed or comfortably retired.

With its relatively high median income, Suffolk County residents are generally affluent, and six of its zip codes are ranked as some of the most expensive in the country.
