Securing Your Server Location

Physical security of your equipment is as important as the security you require on your network connections using software encryption, and the restrictions on access to your machines via the latest password systems. You would not want malicious users to have access to your data by simply walking into the room and physically removing the hard drive from your server. For this reason, your server location must be in a place where access to the room is granted to as few personnel as possible.

Since your server is the most important machine in your facility, your server location should be in a separate room from the rest of the facility. Perhaps, you can locate the server in a different floor; alternatively, if the network is fast enough, you can put the server in a different building. A different lock and key set, separate from the building master, is also highly recommended in your server location to limit access.

Depending on how critical your database is, you could consider installing a pushbutton combination lock at your server location, or arrange for some type of keycard access. It may be wise to provide an alarm system for it as well. Since there would be no one to monitor in your server locations most of the time, installing video surveillance equipment would save time and increase productivity in your facility.

The backups of the system must be kept in a place different from your server location. As a minimum safeguard, you should keep the backup systems in a different room. If possible, it is preferable to store the backups at an offsite location.

No matter where your server location is, ensure there is sufficient air conditioning. In addition, consider having a server location which is large enough to accommodate your equipment and the number of technicians that would be working on them.
