You can usually find flood lighting techniques used to increase the beauty of buildings and monuments during nighttime, for advertisements like sign boards, and illumination of sports areas, gardens, airports, railway yards, dockyards and other open spaces for functional and aesthetic purposes. Floodlighting involves lighting up an object or an entire scene, by use of flood lights, to a degree of illumination more than the surroundings.

In order to get the best flood lighting effect, you should direct light from the lamp into a narrow beam; you can accomplish that with a reflector and a special housing, which becomes a flood lighting projector. The assembly should be durable and weather-proof, as flood lighting is usually installed outside. To maximize the intensity of light on an object, the flood lighting projector has a silvered glass surface on the reflector, or a metal plate of stainless steel or chromium.

Flood lighting projectors are classified as follows: narrow beam, medium angle and wide angle projectors. Narrow beam projectors are usually used for distances of more than seventy meters, medium angle projectors are for 30- to 70-meter distances, and wide angle projectors are for distances between three and thirty meters. The wide angle projectors are usually preferred because energy-efficient, high-powered lamps can be used with these projectors, which provide about eighty to ninety percent efficiency.

If flood lighting is employed for displaying prominently important buildings at night, you can apply this recommended rule: taller buildings need a lower level of illumination, while smaller buildings should have a higher illumination level.

When choosing the type of lamp for flood lighting, note the color of object to be illuminated to get a good effect. Reddish- colored objects look best with incandescent lamps; yellowish ones are fine with sodium vapor lamps or incandescent lamps; and greenish to bluish targets with high-pressure mercury vapor lamps.
