If you have a high definition (HD) television set, you would most likely prefer to connect it to HD satellite receivers than to analog satellite receivers to fully enjoy watching your favorite TV shows. Whether they are analog or HD satellite receivers, these devices are the equipment with the capability to process signals from your satellite dish. The HD satellite receivers step down the high-frequency, digitally modulated, radio frequency signals into the lower frequencies used by HD television sets.

You would connect HD satellite receivers, such as Directtv HD receiver, to your home theater in the same manner that you would hook up your DVD player. You will need both an audio cable and a video cable. HD satellite receivers can provide a digital audio output which you can reroute through the cable direct to your home theater system.

Some HDTV satellite receivers are capable of recording both standard and high definition programming up to a certain number of hours. HD satellite receivers may even have the ability to multitask: you can watch a third pre-recorded program while you are simultaneously recording two other programs.

Like their analog counterparts, HD satellite receivers also offer parental lockout feature. By using this feature, you can select some satellite TV channels that you do not want your children to access and program the device accordingly. These channels can then be viewed only if you enter a secret password.

You can also program your favorite TV channels with HD satellite receivers. This feature makes your viewing experience more convenient as you do not need to recall the particular name of a satellite or the channel number of a given HD satellite TV service. You can select the preferred service from the channel listing that you can call up for display on your TV screen, and your HDTV satellite receiver does the rest.
