( Computers )

Dial up Internet connects a computer through a telephone line to the World Wide Web. The customer requires a computer and a dial up modem to connect. Dial up service providers (ISPs) maintain several telephone numbers that the user calls with his dial up modem. After supplying a username and password, the user is connected, and the Internet Service Providers dial up server keeps track of how much time is spent online. The user may be charged according to this count.

Dial up providers require their own high-speed connection to the Internet and servers that route information to the dial up providers' users. Depending on the dial up providers' services to their clients, they may also require servers that not only track time but also host user data.

Performance and Reliability

Dial up internet is limited to 56kbps due to electrical limitations imposed on phone lines. High-speed dial up Internet is a misnomer as it utilizes the same amount of data transferred, only compressing and filtering certain data to reduce the amount transferred. Dial up Internet has a latency or delay that often causes user connections to end abruptly. If the dial up provider does not have enough open phone lines, the user can be shut out during peak hours.

Price and Choice

Since the turn of the century however, dial up Internet has lost much popularity in areas where broadband access is readily available. Cheap dial up Internet is generally reserved for travel, mobility and never as a solution for a network of computers.

Options for cheap dial up Internet access include dial up cards where the user buys a fixed amount of dial up Internet time. A username and password is on the reverse of cheap dial up Internet cards. Internet cards may vary in price, but the denominations of Internet time are usually in hours such as 100 hours, 50 hours, etc. Once the user has used the card's username and password for that amount of time, the user is disconnected, and the card may be discarded.

Dial up service providers may also provide users with access plans where the user is charged for the number of hours spent online. Fixed rates may be used to provide the user with an unlimited number of hours.
