The counter or checkout area in a retail store is a key position to make additional sales that retail owners and managers sometimes neglect. It is in the counter where every customer who purchases items visits before they leave the store. With the right merchandise on a countertop display, you can exploit the opportunity to sell more items and enhance the store's image.

Choosing the appropriate sales-generating products to place on a countertop display rack requires plenty of thought. The mistake that most retail owners and managers commit is to put as many products as they can think of on countertop displays. It has been found in marketing research that if there are more than three products on a countertop display, customers get overwhelmed. Instead of encouraging them to purchase the displayed items, the clutter makes them decide not to buy anything from the counter.

You may want to follow the idea of some stores that place only one carefully selected item on a countertop display rack. You can use this strategy to limit the focus of your customers on the item. To lure the customer to buy the product, you must see to it that the item on your countertop display is small, seasonal, inexpensive (something that customers can buy with their change), related to items already purchased, and something most customers buy on impulse when they see it. If you have noticed in supermarkets, the products placed on countertop display racks are magazines and in gas stations, these items are chocolate bars.

In addition to selling a single product on a countertop display, you must also make sure that your counter is clean and tidy. You would not want to divert the attention of your customers away from what is displayed on the countertop display rack. Keep your counter area uncluttered, and your countertop display well stocked.
