What is an Altitude Chamber?

Also known as hypobaric chamber, the altitude chamber is a small enclosure used for high altitude training or research. The chamber simulates conditions where there is a very thin or little amount of oxygen as what may be experienced at high altitudes. Besides oxygen level, some altitude chambers also control humidity and temperature levels.

How the Altitude Chamber Works

As a subject, you need to be prepared physiologically before you can go into the chamber to be exposed to a high altitude experience. Your nitrogen level needs to be purged from your system, and this is through breathing in oxygen from masks. This will prevent decompression sickness that is often the result of being exposed to high altitudes. A safety observer accompanies you inside the chamber to make sure that you get proper first aid treatment just in case you pass out. Outside, observers also keep an eye on you via close-circuit TV.

You keep the oxygen mask on as you enter the altitude chamber with your companion. The chamber will simulate a high altitude condition of tens of thousands of feet.

At some point in time during your stay in the altitude chamber, you will be asked to take off your oxygen mask. Then you will have to do menial tasks such as writing and arithmetic. The rate which you are able to accomplish these tasks will be observed and measured.

If observers believe that you are starting to react adversely to the decreasing oxygen level, they will put back the mask on you or administer other emergency procedures if necessary. Tolerance for thinning oxygen and high altitude varies among different individuals.

High Altitude Training

Astronauts and pilots use the altitude chamber as part of their training. The altitude chamber can help them be better prepared for the harsh conditions that they may experience in a high altitude environment. They will learn how to detect low oxygen conditions as well as employ emergency procedures on themselves during the high altitude training.

An Altitude Chamber Experience

If you would like to try out how it feels to be in a high altitude environment, you can visit specific schools or training institutes. Some of these are open to the public and are willing to let you try the altitude chamber for a few minutes. You should make an appointment prior to your visit, in order to make sure that the chamber as well as the operating staff are available to accommodate you.
