Hypertension is often referred to when your blood pressure is higher than what is normal. Normal blood pressure is 120/80. 120 in layman’s terms is the pumping pressure, 80 is referred to as the resting pressure. Blood pressure is a measure used to check how hard your heart is working to pump blood. If your blood pressure is higher than what is normal, it means your heart is working harder and the blood vessels or other vital organs may become damaged in the process. High blood pressure can lead to heart failure or a stroke.

There are two types of hypertension. High blood pressure with no underlying cause is called primary hypertension. Secondary hypertension is often referred to high blood pressure that is caused by a physical ailment or cause by drug intake.

There are no clear-cut factors that trigger primary hypertension. However, stress, smoking and a high-sodium diet all contribute to high blood pressure. Heredity and age are also a few of the most important factors that determine hypertension.

Primary hypertension does not exhibit symptoms for a long time. Usually, a stroke or heart failure is the first indication of hypertension. Due to this, it is important to have your blood pressure checked by your doctor annually. Severe cases of hypertension have symptoms that include headaches, shortness of breath, nosebleeds and chest pains.

Most cases are primary hypertension are detected if you are visiting your doctor for a different ailment. Hypertension when detected is easily treated but can be its complications can be fatal when it goes unchecked.

The treatments available for primary hypertension would differ on your blood pressure. If it is relatively low, a change in diet, regular exercise and stress management are a few of the things that would be recommended for you to lower your blood pressure. Hypertension medications may also be prescribed by your physician. It is important to take these as instructed.

If you have hypertension, you may need treatment for a very long time. Treatments and therapies can delay or even prevent complications brought about by hypertension.
