You may not be aware of it, but your home or office may have used materials containing asbestos. Asbestos is present in many homes and offices especially those built prior to 1978. The floor and ceiling tile, pipe wrap or coating for heating equipment, and roofing materials of your building may have used asbestos materials, which were popular at that time.

Asbestos is not necessarily a problem if you leave it undisturbed, or when it is in good condition. If there are damage materials, however, in your home or office that you suspect to have asbestos fibers, you should never attempt to remove them unless you have proper asbestos removal training. Keep in mind that exposure to asbestos fibers poses a serious health hazard; this carcinogen can cause lung illnesses that include lung cancer when you accidentally inhale its dust.

If you plan to remodel your home and office, and you want to know whether the materials to be removed contain any asbestos, you may use an asbestos test kit to make sure that you will not be exposed to any health risk. Asbestos test kits are readily available at most hardware stores or home centers, and over the internet. These kits are usually sold with bags where you will place your collected samples, and a complete instruction on how to use them. Some asbestos test kits also provide gloves and free postage-paid envelope.

To perform a test, all you need to do is to collect samples of suspected asbestos material from your home or office, and place it in the sample collection bags. You can then bring or send your collected material to a reputable laboratory for appropriate analysis by an asbestos analyst.

If you do not want to conduct the test by using a do-it-yourself asbestos test kit, you can always hire a professional to do it.
