Donor fundraising is one of the most dependable methods organizations use to get funding for particular needs. Organizations rely on donor fundraising to build a new basketball court for a local community or to get new uniforms for the school’s football team. Still others raise money to help a disadvantaged sector of the community or to treat individuals needing expensive medical attention or care. Donor fundraising focuses on supporting the cause of individuals or organizations in need.

When developing a donor fundraising strategy, keep in mind the following:

• Establish your donor fundraising priorities and goals. The first step in successful donor fundraising is to set a specific goal. Whether big or small, donor fundraising goals must be clearly expressed to potential donors. How will the money actually be spent? Does the community really need a basketball court? How will this impact the lives of individuals affected? Once donors perceive how their donation can make a difference, they will throw their support behind the fundraising and give whatever assistance they can.

• Appoint a donor fundraising manager. This can be a respectable person in the community such as a dean, businessman or doctor or even a donor himself who is highly regarded and respected. If people trust the individual spearheading the donor fundraising campaign, they are more likely to champion its cause as opposed to someone they hardly know and whose reputation they may question.

• Identify potential donors. This can mean looking up certain individuals, what causes they support, history of donor fundraising contributions and community standing.

• Organize donor fundraising activities. Plan when and where to hold specific activities and to help accomplish your donor fundraising goals. Think golf tournaments, book sales, church bazaars or town festivals depending on your cause; the list could go on.

• Promote and advertise. There are many ways to make donor fundraising visible. Produce and distribute promo materials, TV and radio exposure, publications, cause-related marketing and special events are some of the most effective ways to publicize donor fundraising.

• Keep track of contributions. If your donor fundraising is continuing, a report should be readily available and published if possible. Donors want to know how their money is being spent, so transparency is of utmost importance.

Finally evaluate your goals and the means and tools you have available to reach these goals. Once your goals are clear, it should be easier to find the means and tools to achieve them.
