Before Making Your Dorm Packing List

A dorm room has much less space than your own bedroom, and it's more likely that you will be sharing that room with at least one more person.

Try visiting your future college campus and the dorm that you will be staying in, if you have a chance. You need to have an idea of the size of the furniture of your dorm room. This will help you gauge what items you can keep in the room.

Learn about the dorm's rules and policies regarding laundry, meals, and allowed items. Knowing the rules and policies will help you determine what items you can bring.

Find out if there are stores close to the dorm, where you can buy necessities such as toiletries and extra batteries. Then you can buy some of your dorm supplies there instead of having to bring them from home.

If you don't have a car to drive to campus and have to go there by plane or bus, you need to restrict the things you will bring. Your dorm packing list will resemble a typical trip packing list. The other items, such as appliances, will have to be shipped to your dorm.

What Should Be Part of Your Dorm Packing List?

The most important items in your dorm packing list are the gadgets that you will use for surviving at college, like your cellphone, MP3 player and computer. You should also bring a study lamp and fan. Also consider bringing a small microwave oven or toaster, unless the dorm has a complete kitchen.

Bring only what you are sure to wear, and have extra outer clothing like jackets or winter attire. Since your laundry days will be very limited, you should consider bring at least several sets of sleepwear and undergarments as well. Preferably bring items that you can mix and match. You also need at least two to three sets of towels.

Bring comfortable shoes, and have at least one formal pair for dressier occasions. Don't forget to bring slippers to use in your dorm room and a pair for bathroom use.

You will normally have to bring your own pillows, bedsheets and blankets, since the dorm does not provide these. An extra set of utensils and dishes will also be helpful, if you want to take your meals or snacks in your room.

As far as toiletries such as soap and toothpaste are concerned, bring only travel sizes as you can always buy these items at a local grocery or campus store. Likewise, you can buy detergents and cleaning supplies at these places. If you use make-up, store these in a small carry case.
