This new york auto show is a gathering of automobile owners and manufacturers. It includes demonstration of:
- current automobile models
- concept cars

- out-of-production classics.

This type of show is both important to the automobile industry as publicity as well as local dealers who want to attract consumers to their showrooms.

A show car (concept car) is a prototype intended to showcase a concept new technology or styling etc. They are used at motor shows to test consumer reaction to radical and new designs.

Concept cars don’t often get produced immediately. Most of them at least go through some changes before the end design is decided upon. This is for the sake of safety, practicality and cost.

These cars often have a radical design or engine.

This may be by using exotic non-traditional or expensive materials (carbon fiber, paper, exotic alloys) or unique layouts (3 or 6 wheels, gullwing door or special capabilities one doesn’t usually find in cars).

Because of these unprofitable or impractical characteristics, many concept cars remain as scale models or simply computer designed drawings.

Those with a more traditional leaning are developed as completely operational vehicles, complete with making drive-train and accessories.

But usually concept cars fall somewhere in between – but in any case doesn’t show the final product.

Mock-ups that don’t work are usually made of:
- plastic
- wax
- metal
- clay
- fiberglass
or combinations thereof.

If the car is drivable, a production vehicle drivetrain from the same company is often used.

After the useful life of a concept car, it is usually destroyed. Some survive in company museums or forgotten in storage.
