Designing Your Lawn Sprinkler System

Before installing your lawn sprinkler system, you need to make a lay-out to know the spots where you are placing the sprinklers.

Most do-it-yourself lawn sprinkler system installation kits come with recommended lay-outs and approximate capacities. The lengths of the lawn belts and the sprinkling power of the heads are specified in the instructions, so that you will have an idea of how you should install them.

While each kit may already be sufficient for a small lawn, you will need more lawn belts and sprinkler heads if you want the sprinkler system to cover a larger area of your yard.

Needed Materials and Tools

The lawn sprinkler system installation kit tells you what tools you should use, depending on the type of system and lay-out you want to follow.

You will need an outdoor spigot or faucet, which will be the main medium for transporting water to your sprinklers. Some kits are designed for single spigots while others require more than one spigot. You need one short hose to act as conduit between the spigot and the lawn belts. Lawn belts act as pipes through which water can be transported to the sprinkler heads. You will also need a Y-adapter if you want to use a single spigot to water different areas of your yard.

A good strong spade will help you dig the path where you will bury the lawn belt that connects the sprinkler heads to the main spigot. You also need a utility knife and a screwdriver set for adjusting and connecting the components of your lawn sprinkler system.

Steps in Lawn Sprinkler System Installation

You need to connect the sprinkler heads to the lawn belts. One part of the lawn belts will also be attached to a hose, which is finally attached to the spigot.

Make marks on the ground for the path of the lawn belt. Using your spade, dig about three to four inches deep, making sure that the slit is wide enough to house the lawn belt.

From the spigot, start placing the lawn belt into the slits that you have dug for your path. Press firmly with your foot to make sure that the belt is underground, but leave the sprinkler head above ground.

Before covering the path with soil, test the lawn sprinkler system by turning on the water. The sprinkler heads should be able to spurt out the water at the correct distances and directions, and there should be nothing to block the path of the sprinkler heads. Once you're satisfied with the sprinkler's operation, then you can cover the slits with soil.

Installing sprinkler systems usually takes several hours, depending on the size of the area and number of sprinkler heads.
