If you want to set up a wireless network in your home, you would need a wireless networking card or wireless NIC card. A wireless NIC card provides you the freedom to do your work without the clutter of wires, and to work from anywhere in your house.

Some of the functions of a wireless NIC card include allowing your computer (whether desktop or laptop) to be connected to your home network using a wireless signal, safeguarding the path of communications between your wireless router and the desktop or laptop computers that have connections over wireless, and giving a means to establish connection with other wireless networks that are not within your home network.

Setting up a wireless NIC card depends on the type of card that is compatible with your desktop or laptop. You can choose from PC bus cards with or without PCI adapters or USB wireless NIC card. Laptop wireless network card may be built-in in your unit, so check it first before you purchase a wireless NIC card to ensure whether there is a need for you to buy one. Some built-in wireless NIC cards in laptops are already high-powered, allowing the equipment to operate at a maximum range of 1,300 feet.

Some desktops may also have a built-in wireless NIC card, although it is not that common. If there is no built-in wireless NIC card in your desktop, you can either purchase a PC bus card with or without adapters, or a USB wireless NIC card. If you do not wish to find clutters in your desktop, you can choose a card that can be installed inside your desktop's open card slot. But if you do not want to open your PC, you can always opt for a USB wireless NIC card that can be simply plugged into an open USB port.
