Attempts at Gender Selection

There are several reasons why being able to select genders of children may be important. The one-child policy in China for instance is a pressure against large families and causes parents to prefer one gender over another. In many Asian families, boys are regarded as the carriers of their family names, hence they are preferred over girls.

Sometimes the need to select gender is economic in nature. Some parents can afford to have only two children and may want one of each gender. When one gender dominates in a family, like too many boys for instance, parents usually wish they could have control over the gender of the next baby.

Medical experts have tried to research for ways where parents might be able to predict or select their baby's gender. Factors such as the mother's age, diet, and even moods are said to affect the sex of the baby. Folklore has also contributed various methods on gender selection.

What is the Chinese Gender Selection Chart?

According to legend, the Chinese gender selection was found in a royal tomb. It is supposed to be over seven hundred years ago. It is a matrix-like table with two coordinates showing the mother's age in years and the month of conception, which are the two principal factors for influencing the baby's gender.

How to Use the Chinese Gender Selection Chart

The grid has two coordinates. The horizontal axis shows the months January to December, and the vertical axis shows the mother's age in years. You can look up your exact age and the month of your conception. Then look through the grid where these two figures cross, and this intersection indicates one of the genders. This will be your baby's gender.

In a variation of the chart, you need to calculate your exact age and month of conception based on the lunar calendar. This is supposed to be more accurate than the westernized version of the Chinese gender selection chart.

Another version shows the probabilities of each gender on each end of the grid. This assumes that the theory is not totally reliable and that there are possible factors that could distort the likelihood of actually selecting your baby's gender, like the exact hour that you conceived or the stage of your monthly cycle.

Accuracy of the Chinese Gender Selection Chart

Unfortunately, the Chinese gender chart is not foolproof. Sites that feature the chart usually warn you that it is only 50-60% accurate at the most.

Some medical practitioners recommend you to take your daily basal body temperature to determine your most fertile period. You can increase your chances of having a boy when you conceive within this period.

At best, the Chinese gender selection chart should not be taken too seriously. You should also consult your doctor regarding other gender selection methods and use them in combination with the gender chart.
