If you have a severe headache or migraine, your doctor may have given recommendation or prescription for some kind of migraine medicines. Migraine medicines may require prescriptions from physicians or they can easily be bought over the counter. Simple analgesics which contain pain relieving properties, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs are some of the migraine medicines that do not require the prescription of a doctor.

Migraine medicines that will not be dispensed unless there is a prescription include vasoconstrictors which allow blood vessels to constrict, and ergotamines which are potent vasoconstrictors used to abort any attacks of migraine. There are also migraine medicines called antinauseants (which are mainly used for treating nausea) that can give relief to migraine pain. You should strictly follow the dosages of these migraine meds that your doctor recommends.

If you suffer from severe episodes of migraine (status migrainosis) or a migraine that lasts longer than the usual attack, then a more powerful anti-inflammatory steroidal migraine medicine may be used to treat the pain. Some doctors may provide prescriptions of migraine medicines that contain narcotics and morphine because of their painkilling properties.

Other migraine medicines that help prevent attacks are those prescribed for patients who suffer seizures called antiepileptic medications. Migraine meds of this type have the ability to calm down the neuron membranes, which will then result in lesser migraine attacks. Because this migraine medicine comes with side effects, doctors usually begin with lower doses. One disadvantage of this migraine medicine is that its effect is slow, taking between two and four weeks to work.

Other migraine medicines include antidepressants, which are primarily used for treating anxiety and depressions, and blood pressure medications which contain beta blocking properties. Some vitamins and minerals may also be recommended by your attending physician to complement your migraine medicines.
