Wireless networks, using wireless networking cards, offer a neat solution to connect your desktops, laptops or notebooks without the string of cables that can be visibly seen on your walls. Although a wireless network is slower than a cable network, it gives you the liberty of doing your work on your deck or anywhere in the house without worrying if signal passes through the ceilings, or walls. With internet-sharing software properly installed on your wireless network, you will also be able to surf the web.

For installation of a wireless network, you will need a PCI wireless networking card for each of your desktops, and PC cards for all of the notebooks that you want to be connected. Your wireless network components can be purchased in kits or in separate packages. If you are familiar with, or have previously installed a wired network, then expect to pay a higher price for wireless network components. Keep in mind, too, that while you can mix and match components of a wired network, wireless networks have to use matched wireless networking cards exclusively from the same manufacturer.

When installing wireless networking cards, be sure that they are properly secured in their respective slots. You may have to fasten them using a screw. There may be a necessity for you to turn your computer chassis on its side. You only have to do this, however, so you can push down the wireless networking cards while you are inserting them.

If you are still using a wireless networking card that requires an external antenna, you can simply attach the antenna to the rear of the laptop wireless network card. Be sure that you do not place the antenna on a metallic surface and that its location is higher to take advantage of the maximum signal range.
