What is Thermal Reconditioning?

This is a revolutionary hair treatment where the bonds of your hair are restructuring so that they will fall straight and be resistant against the elements. In thermal reconditioning, your hair stays neat even without combing or setting.

The Thermal Reconditioning Process

The salon will need to assess the texture and type of your hair. Then the stylist will wash your hair and apply a spray of protein and the first dose of the rebonding solution. Then after testing your hair to see any results, the stylist will rinse it out and reapply the protein solution. Then your hair is ironed using a special thermal iron.

After ironing, the stylist will apply a neutralizer, rinse your hair, and re-iron it to remove excess moisture. At this point, your hair should have already straightened out, and feel soft and smooth.

The entire process of thermal reconditioning takes anywhere from three to six hours depending on the length of your hair and its responsiveness to the treatment.

The parts of your hair that have been treated with rebonding solution will stay that way unless you have them cut. You will only need retouches every six to ten months depending on how fast your hair grows. The solutions will be applied only on the roots.

The Downside of Thermal Reconditioning

Thermal reconditioning doesn't work on all types of hair. You may not also get the right results if you have color or highlights on your hair, since the peroxide content of hair dyes may counteract with the reconditioning solutions. Some hair types may be too fragile or sensitive to extreme heat from the thermal iron which may cause breakage.

Perhaps the biggest downside is the cost, which can run from several hundred to a thousand dollars per treatment. Even retouching treatments are not any cheaper.

There are only very few salons that offer this treatment, and they are usually the higher-end ones which charge a lot for other services. You could stand the risk of severe hair damage if you opt for salons that may charge less but may not be as experienced in providing this treatment.

Thermal reconditioning does not use thermal engines or heating manifolds.
