Importance of a Good, Healthy Diet

The primary purpose of eating is to survive and live through everyday pressures. A healthy diet provides essential nutrients for your body to perform optimally and to be resistant against disease. Good foods also keep your weight at a manageable level and prevent occurrence of disorders of the heart, liver and other major body organs. Even though you do catch a minor illness, you will recover more easily if you're healthy in the first place.

Not All Foods are Created Alike

Unfortunately, not all foods you find in the market are healthy for you. There are bad products which jeopardize your health and cause you to develop problems in the long run. While they are not defective products, bad foods contain ingredients that are unnatural and can cause various reactions in your body.

In fact, many bad foods look very attractive and may even taste a lot better than good foods. Therefore, you will be tempted to eat more of bad foods and may neglect to eat the more nutritious ones.

Classes of Bad Foods

Food experts have identified and labeled some foods as bad. When taken in small doses, these foods will not really affect your health. It is only when you take more of these bad foods that you will stand the risk of developing health problems.

Foods that are rich in fat, like butter and french fries, can clog your arteries, raise your cholesterol level, and cause other heart-related problems. A little fat used in cooked food helps you burn calories. Conversely, it can add build up fats in your body and make you gain weight.

Sugar in small amounts is not harmful, but in larger amounts, it can contribute diabetes and hypertension. The most popular foods like candy, cakes, ice cream and carbonated soft drinks are loaded with harmful levels of sugar.

Sodium-based products like table salt and soy sauce are acceptable in small doses for flavoring food, but can cause kidney disorders if taken in excess. Potato chips, salted peanuts and canned products are usually very high in sodium. Even lean cold cuts are loaded with preservatives and sodium.

What You Should Do About Bad Foods

Avoidance is still the best thing you can do. You should also substitute them with healthier alternatives.

For instance, instead of taking carbonated drinks like cola, you can drink fresh fruit juices or just water. Substitute french fries with oven-baked potatoes, and fiber-rich brown rice for white rice. If you have a craving for sweets, try eating fresh fruit or sugar-free counterparts of your favorites.
