The Needs of Ping Pong

Before you can play ping pong or table tennis, you need two table tennis paddles, one ball, a mesh net and a standard size ping pong table.

You can play ping pong anywhere on good solid ground, but it is preferable to play the sport indoors where the ping pong table is resting on a smooth floor surface. This prevents scratches and painful injury in case you slip and fall while playing.

Major Considerations in Buying a Ping Pong Table

You should consider if you're playing ping pong just for fun or for competition. While you can use a makeshift rectangular table for home practice, you should invest in a good standard sized ping pong table if you intend to play the sport professionally. It helps you get a feel of the actual competition setting.

Quality of the table affects your playing performance, but you shouldn't have to spend on high-end brands like Butterfly or Stiga tables if you're still a beginner. There are many lower cost ping pong tables that are sturdy enough to take hours of practice and play. Consider having the foldable type with wheels if you don't have extra space in your home or backyard, so that you can fold the table and put it away if you don't need it.

Make sure that the ball can bounce evenly on top of the ping pong table, and that the table's surface does not have any scratches or dents that would affect the ball's movement. You should also test the height of the ball's bounce, which should be about 23 centimeters when dropped from a height of 30 centimeters.

Check out the legs and support structure of the table, making sure that it does not wobble or change its position as you play on it.

Caring for Your Ping Pong Table

Avoid standing or sitting on top of the table, as this can break its legs and cause the surface to be uneven.

You can easily move the table to another location if it has wheels. If the table doesn't have wheels, you and a companion should move it by lifting gently off the ground instead of dragging it.

Make sure that the net you are using has cushioned clamps to avoid scratching the table. If the clamps aren't cushioned, you can line the clamped area with felt or soft cloth.

Keep the table clean by wiping with soft cloth and occasionally with mild soap. Don't put food on the table surface or use it for other activities like crafting or repair as these would cause stains or damage.
