If you are below the age of majority and you want to experience the excitement of operating a watercraft, your state may require you to take a mandatory boaters test. To make sure that this requirement is present in your state, it is best to review your state laws first before even taking a boating education or water safety course. However, even if your state does not have this mandatory requirement, you may find it worth your time and money to attend a boating safety course.

In case your state has passed a law making it mandatory for juveniles to pass a boaters test, it is usually required for operating a watercraft that has at least ten horsepower. Because the limit is ten horsepower, this only means that even operating a personal watercraft, such as a jet ski, would also require you to pass the state-regulated boaters exam.

Although watercraft accidents, which lead to property damage, physical injury and death, are not usually caused by juveniles, lawmakers in states requiring boaters test feel that youth safety should be paramount when operating boats or personal watercrafts. This is the main reason why laws have been passed requiring a mandatory boaters test among juvenile watercraft operators.

Boaters Test Format

Boaters tests in most states are in the form of multiple choice format. The boaters exam would evaluate whether you possess sufficient knowledge as regards water safety and the basics on how to operate boats and personal watercraft. In order to pass the boaters test, you must garner a score of at least eighty percent.

There are three options as to where you can take the boaters test. These are in the Coast Guard offices, the natural resources department of your state and in this age of the internet, you can also take the boaters exam online.
