Nature and Treatment of AIDS

Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome or AIDS is the deadliest disease known to mankind. AIDS is caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus or HIV, which destroys the body's immunity system and causes it to become susceptible to other ailments. Because of almost no immunity, AIDS patients can die even from the mildest illnesses such as the common cold. AIDS is now the fifth leading cause of death in the United States, infecting mostly ages 25 to 44.

AIDS can spread through sexual contact, blood transfusion from an infected person, injections using or birth if the mother is already infected. The virus can be found in saliva, blood, seminal fluid, vaginal dischargesm, and breast milk.

To date, there has been no known cure for AIDS. An infected person will be lucky to live many years without getting sick. In rare cases, some HIV positive cases may almost never progress into AIDS. The only available treatment involves delaying the progression of HIV into full-blown AIDS, to enable the patient to live much longer compared to getting no treatment at all.

Medical experts have yet to come up with a vaccine that is effective for preventing AIDS. The only ways to prevent AIDS are to use condoms during sexual contact and to avoid sharing needles for intravenous drugs. A pregnant mother who is HIV positive must undergo treatment to minimize or even eliminate the chances of passing on the virus to the baby.

Dire AIDS Statistics

World AIDS statistics are found in many internet sites and also in health journals. The figures shown in web statistics are quite staggering, as they are in the millions regardless of age or gender.

AIDS statistics also show the distribution by gender, and women accounting for more than half of all infected patients. Young people also account for half of newly infected individuals. And while there are millions of infected people in developing countries, less than half of these people have access to treatment.

Perhaps the most disturbing AIDS statistics are those showing the global trends over the years. Incidences of HIV infection have risen steadily each year, and will continue to rise in the future.

Significance of AIDS Statistics

Grim as they are, AIDS statistics should serve to instill awareness about the deadliness of the disease. The figures give forth a warning to take extra precaution to prevent the disease from spreading.

AIDS statistics also indirectly act as an appeal for help. Ordinary citizens can donate money, food, medicine or toiletries to areas of the world which have high incidences of AIDS, such as Africa. You can do your own share of donating necessities or organizing AIDS awareness programs in your local community, and you can also look up sites that specifically manage such programs.
