Business Trips Compared to Pleasure Trips

A business trip is quite different from a regular pleasure trip. Normally, your aim is to meet with other colleagues and with customers, so you need to look your best even while you are traveling.

Business travel involves mostly work and very little leisure. Your hours during flight, hotel stay and actual work are all time-bound, and you need to practice a high level of discipline to keep up with all your schedules.

Hence, your trip packing list for travel should be meticulously planned.

Factors to Consider in Preparing a Business Trip Packing List

Know the exact location and flight schedule, as well as your daily work schedule. This will help determine whether you need to bring extra things in your carry-on bag. For instance, if you have a long flight across continents, you might want to bring your laptop as a carry-on item so that you can work on your files during the trip. You could read business documents or presentation materials to maximize time usage. Knowing your schedule will also help you plan on your wardrobe, especially how many pieces of clothing you will bring.

If it is your first time to the country you are visiting, you may want to get a briefing about local business customs and traditions. For instance, some Asian countries practice gift-giving, so you should figure out if you have to do it as well.

Find out about the amenities of the hotel or residence you will be staying at. You can save luggage space by not having to bring towels if the hotel provides it anyway. Most likely, your hotel would already provide for toiletries like soap, shampoo and lotion.

Also find out if your hosts might be providing free days where you can tour the place and bring you out to local restaurants, so that you can bring proper attire for such occasions.

Business Trip Packing List Must-Haves

Your passport, credit cards, identity cards and extra cash are the most important items in your trip packing list. Also bring business cards or store the list of your contacts in your mobile phone or PDA.

You may want to bring your own laptop computer, unless your host will provide one for you. In case you don't have to bring one, take along CD copies or your flash drive to use for your presentation or meeting agenda.

Your carry-on bag should already have almost all your essential items, just in case your checked-in luggage gets misrouted on the way. It should also contain some basic toiletries and at least one change of clothing.

A good briefcase will also help you organize all the things you will need for your meetings and seminars. It should be big enough to store your essentials including your laptop.
