Highlights of Historic Texas

Before it became part of the Union, Texas used to be a province under several governments - France, Spain and Mexico.

In the early part of the nineteenth century, Texas became part of Mexico after the latter's war of independence against Spain.

In 1836, Texas became an independent republic with its own president. The new republic later suffered financial difficulties, which prompted Texans to consider the idea of being annexed to the Confederacy in 1861, and later to the Union.

Early Texas Flag History

When it used to be a colony, Texas used the flags of its colonizers France and Spain. Early Texas flags depicted designs that used basic symbols of each country - fleur-de-lis of France and the Crown of Castile of Spain. When Texas became part of Mexico, it also used the Mexican flag.

During its brief independence, Texas adopted the lone star design on its flag. The flag had a light blue background with one large golden star in the center. However, it was not known who actually design this early Texas flag. The lone star flag design continued to be in use until 1879.

When Texas joined the Confederacy in 1861, it adopted the Confederacy flag as well as its own. And in 1865, Texas officially became the Union's 28th state.

Modern Texas Flag

The current state flag adopted the same colors as the US flag. Each color stood for bravery, loyalty and purity.

The new state flag had three rectangles, with the blue one in vertical position and the other two in horizontal position. A lone white star is on the center of the blue rectangle, which is on the left of the flag. Thus, the state continued to be known as the Lone Star State.
