What is Double Glazing?

Double glazing involves placing two sheets of glass against each other, and then hermetically sealing all edges and openings. In effect, there is space between the two sheets of glass. Manufacturers of double glazed windows and other glass materials either vacuum out any excess air from the space, or introduce an inert gas such as argon or krypton which provides better insulating capability.

The air space between the two glass sheets provides some form of insulation against heat, especially in enclosed areas. Hence, double glazed glass is often used as a popular material for making windows and sliding doors.

Benefits of Double Glazing

The insulating ability of double glazing makes it a popular process in making windows and sliding doors. The air space keeps off heat from sunlight and outdoor air, so that your home or building interior is kept cool in spite of summer heat. Even with double glazing, objects inside can still be visible, so double glazing can also be used for shop windows. You can also use double glazed glass for your skylights to reduce the amount of heat that enters through the ceiling. Double glazed windows are also perfect for your conservatory as they will not overheat the plants inside.

Double glazed windows also reduce the volume of outdoor noise, as well provide some security as they are very resistant to impact.

Enhancements and Alternatives to Double Glazing

The insulation quality of double glazed windows and doors can be further enhanced by tinting one or both sides of the glass surface. When tinting the glass, you can also have the option to add a color such as blue, brown or green. This improves the appearance of the glass and adds to the beauty of your home or building. However, tinting a double glazed window may also give an opaque or one-way mirror effect.

Because of the process and materials involved, double glazing may cost more than single sheet glass. One alternative is to use lower-costing argon rather than krypton, and to tint only the single glass layer on either one or both sides.
