Male and Female Parts of Devices

All electronic devices that operate with electricity have either male or female parts. The male parts are pins and sockets that can be plugged into electrical outlets or allow connections between two different components.

The female parts are the ports or holes where you can plug in the male parts to connect the device to an electrical source or to another device. For instance, a laptop has ports where you can plug in another device such as a scanner or a CD burner.

Purposes of Gender Changers

Occasionally, you may have a device whose male part, the socket, does not fit into the port or female part of another device. These incompatibilities may be because the device was manufactured in another country that uses only a specific style of connector or plug. It is quite common then that devices which you bought from the UK may have a plug that cannot fit into your own US-made outlet.

In some cases, you may want to connect two devices that have female-only or male-only connectors. Without any adapting devices or cables, connecting the two devices will be impossible.

You need gender changers, or connectors that have male or female parts to make your devices compatible.

Sometimes, your devices may be located far from each other, and moving them closer may not be feasible. In such case, you can also use a gender changer to connect them to each other even if they're yards apart.

Types of Gender Changers

There are male-to-male, female-to-female, or male-to-female types of gender changers. Male-to-male gender changers have plugs or pins on both sides. On the other hand, female-to-female gender changers have only holes throughout the connector. Male-to-female gender changers have both holes and pins, and are usually for correcting incompatibilities.

Some female-only gender changers have different hole sizes as well, so that they can adapt easily to different types of devices.

Buying Gender Changers

When you select gender changers, make sure that you know exactly where to connect them on your devices. Check the sizes of the pins and holes of the gender changer, because even slightly longer pins will affect the connectivity.

Next to checking the ports that you have on your computer, you should also check the shape of the ports. Some ports are round while others are rectangular, so you have to buy the right kind of cable gender changer that would also adapt to the shape.

You can buy gender changers at your local computer or electronics retailer or through online sources.
