What is a Packing List?

When you travel, you have to bring along some important items with you. Depending on the purpose of your trip, you need a trip packing list that will itemize in detail all the things that you should consider bringing with you.

The packing list is like a checklist which you can save on your computer so that you can refer back to it as often as you want. You can tick off the items directly on the trip packing list, or you can print a hard copy and simply use a pen to mark off the items.

If you want, you can add or remove some items from the list if they don't apply to your case. For instance, the trip packing list might have a special category for children or babies, which may not be useful if you're just traveling alone.

Online Packing List Templates

The internet has many sites which provide packing list templates for general or specific use. There are sites that feature only cruise packing lists or even dorm packing lists for students.

You can bookmark the page that features the packing list template, or print out a copy to serve as a handy reference as you do your packing.

Categories in the Packing List Template

A typical packing list template groups all the items into different categories.

One group would be the must-have list, specifying items that you really need to bring with you. This group includes money, passports, traveler's checks, medication, documents, and any communication devices you need to use during your trip.

Another category contains optional items which you can bring to make your trip more comfortable. For instance, an additional pillow or a flashlight would be nice to have during a trip to the beach or to a campsite.

There are also categories that list important things needed by babies or children, and even suggest the number of each item. Babies would especially need strollers, diapers, bottles and formula.

The packing list template also has categories for things that you should do before leaving, such as turning off basic appliances and making arrangements with neighbors or relatives about pets or mail.

Using Your Packing List Template

You may have observed that not all packing lists can truly apply to your own case. You can simply ignore the items as you go over the list, or cross out the item on a printed copy.

Moreover, the packing list template is not absolute. You can add other items on the list that you think are vital for your trip. You can copy the packing list or download it onto your hard drive so that you make it more personalized.

It is also good to have several types of packing list templates for different trip purposes.
