Background of the Hummer

The original Hummer version was used mainly for military purposes and functioned more like trucks. The manufacturer, AM General, saw the merits of the vehicle's endurance on rough terrains and had wanted to market a civilian version as early as the 1980s.

It wasn't till 1992 when AM General introduced a civilian version of the Hummer, which was quite well received. The Hummer appeared in several blockbuster films which resulted in increased public awareness about its features.

In 1998, General Motors took over the marketing and distribution of the Hummer while AM General continued the manufacturing process. The original version became known as H1 and two new H2 and H3 models were introduced as civilian versions.

The vehicle was introduced to the international market in 2006. Other countries started marketing and production of newer H2 and H3 models. To date, there are over 300 Hummer dealerships in 34 countries. More than half of the Hummer dealerships are in the USA.

Features of the Hummer

Many people got interested in the Hummer because of its off-road capabilities and heavy duty performance, as well as its rugged sporty look. It did win several victories in various stock car races in the 90s. The Hummer is popularly used as a disaster aid vehicle, and as a regular sports utility vehicle.

Despite the rugged looking exterior, the Hummer's seats are quite comfortable, and each model comes with stereo and air conditioning as standards.

A downside though is that the Hummer does have a high fuel consumption at 15 miles per gallon. The vehicle is also massive and may be difficult to fit into small parking spaces or roads.

GM has been making the effort to introduce a new model that will use biofuel instead of regular petroleum-based fuel, as well as possible modifications of the vehicle's design.
