History and Geography of Suffolk County

Named after an English town and located on the eastern coast of the state, Suffolk County was created in 1643 and has four major areas - Boston, Chelsea, Revere and Winthrop. It exists today as a historic geographical region with no formal government of its own, and is under the Boston City Council.

The county has a total area of 120 square miles inclusive of land and water. The population is roughly about 700,000 of mostly European descent. Median income per year for most Suffolk County homes is between 35,000 to 40,000.

Major Cities of Suffolk County

Boston is the largest and most popular city in the county. It is also the state capital and the county seat of Suffolk. In history, it is the seat of the American revolution. At least three of the most famous heroes in US history have been among its residents. Many of its residents also descended from Irish immigrants. There are many attractions in Boston, including an arboretum, an aquarium, a planetarium and several historical scenarios. Boston is also home to several large colleges and universities.

Chelsea used to be a trading post but has slowly transformed into an industrial city. It was famous for being a manorial estate in the 18th century, then a summer resort in the 19th century.

Revere was named after the famous horse-riding hero Paul Revere. It has a quiet New England small town setting. The city is famous for Revere Beach, also known as the oldest public beach in the nation, where a sand-sculpting festival is held every year.

Winthrop is located right on the Boston Harbor, and gives you a spectacular panoramic view of the harbor and the skyline. It is one of the oldest East Coast communities, which also has its own share of historic houses and museums.

Suffolk County Real Estate Profile

Suffolk County real estate prices have sharp contrasts. On one hand, the cheapest homes are about a hundred thousand dollars, and at the other extreme, the most expensive ones sell over two hundred thousand. Most homes were built during the middle part of the 20th century, so this makes Suffolk County a relatively affordable place to buy a home.

More than sixty percent of Suffolk County homes are renter-occupied, with mean monthly rental rates of less than one thousand dollars.

With its many historic spots, schools, museums, libraries and places of recreation, Suffolk County offers a wholesome environment for singles and families.
