Status of Gays and Lesbians in Society

Where they used to be social pariahs during ancient times, they have been making themselves more heard in today's society. There is now a more respectful and tolerant attitude towards gays and lesbians.

A reason for this phenomenon is the presence of strong gay and lesbian support groups. Just like other cultural or racial ethnic groups, gays and lesbians have learned the power of solidarity. Instead of hiding in shame, they have learned to openly assert their rights.

Another boosting factor is that many gays have significantly contributed to art, science and other major professions. Throughout history, many famous performing artists, painters, sculptors, writers and even national leaders were gay or lesbian.

Clamor for Legalization of Same Sex Marriage

A current social issue that has been ardently pressed by gays and lesbians is the legalization of same sex marriages. They no longer want just acceptance, but also recognition of their rights to co-habitation and custody of any children they may have.

At least six nations and two US states have formally recognized and accepted same sex marriages. Some governments choose to give the same rights to same sex couples as opposite sex marriages, and place same sex marriage in the same status as a civil partnership or common law marriage. The rest of the world is either indifferent, undecided or even adamantly against the idea.

Arguments to Support Same Sex Marriage

People who support same sex marriage want equal rights for everyone, regardless of being gay or not. For them, getting married legally is the best way for the couple to express their love for each other. A legally recognized marriage will also afford them the rights to share their properties with each other, as well as give them the joint responsibility of caring for any children they may want to raise. They argue that everyone is entitled to choose his or her lifetime partner regardless of gender, and being happily married is all that counts.

Against Same Sex Marriage

On the other hand, there are people who definitely don't support same sex marriage. Most of these are people who belong to Christian and other religious groups. They quote that God has created man and woman for the purpose of procreation, something that will be impossible if the couple is of the same sex. Furthermore, same sex marriage is a violation of Biblical commandments and principles, and is deemed as a mortal sin.

The Indifferent or Undecided about Same Sex Marriage

In between these two opposing groups, there are people who prefer to take a neutral stand. They say that legalization is not necessary since the law provides gay couples with same rights as legally married couples.

The issue remains unresolved, however, and its success in being recognized will ultimately depend on the strength and influence of the groups that support or reject it.
