It is a transreceiver developed in Taiwan, and has been made compatible with Cisco's optic modules. GLC GE 100FX supports module upgrades as well. With fast ethernet as its data link protocol, this transreceiver runs on 100 Mbps and serves as an SFP port. SFP stands for Small Form-Factor Pluggable. This device allows for a quick swapping or migrating connection paths towards gigabit ethernet.

It is compatible with switches and routers as well as SFP ports developed by Cisco, for as long as they have LC-type connectors. The GLC GE 100FX has a minimum wavelength of 1270 nm and a maximum of 1380, a modal bandwidth of 500 MHz per kilometer, and a cable length of 2 kilometers. For its cabling, the Ethernet 100Base-FX is used. Its fiber type is MMF and its recommended cable length is 6562 feet.

The product is small and usually comes in its original color, silver, with black parts and white stickers that describe product details. It measures 2.23 inches in width, 0.39 inches in height, and 0.54 inches in depth. The GE GLC 100FX comes in a protective packaging as well as an optical bore dust plug. For easier installation, the transreceiver has both send and receive marks on the product to indicate which is the top and which is the bottom side. This ensures proper positioning of the GE GLC 100FX in the socket opening.

The GLC GE 100FX is available for purchase online, usually with a minimum order of one piece and a maximum of one hundred pieces. They come with a year's worth of manufacturer's guarantee against possible defects.

Online sellers provide quotes on brand new, used, and refurbished transreceivers. They not only sell the GLC GE 100FX, they are also open to buying pre-owned transreceivers for as long as the product is still in excellent working condition and is qualified for resale.

Other related models to the GLC GE 100FX are the GLC FE 100FX and the CWDM GBIC 1530. Although it bears with its name the letters GE, the said transreceiver is a product of Cisco systems and must not be confused with GE indoor floodlights.
