Early History of Pantages Theatre Toronto

Actually the Pantages Theatre Toronto is now known as Canon Theatre. The largest theater in Canada, it opened in 1920 as a venue for vaudevilles and movies as well.

The theater took its original name from a Greek fortune hunter who first invested in a small theater. Eventually Pantages was able to build an entire empire of theaters all over North America. One of these is the very popular Pantages Theater Hollywood.

However, the theater empire that Pantages had built was forced to sell out due to a scandal involving its owner, with only a few branches still retaining the Pantages name.

Pantages Theatre Toronto changed its name to Imperial when it was bought out in 1930. It became a theater that showed only motion pictures. But this theater eventually closed in 1972 and was remodelled into six theaters. The six new theaters did well by showing the most popular films. Later in 1988, the theater was resold to its major competitor but with a condition that prohibits it from showing films again.

Revival of Pantages Theatre Toronto

The new owners decided to restore the theater back to its old 1920 grandeur and revived the original Pantages name as well. In 1989, the theater reopened with its first stage showing of Phantom of the Opera. This musical was an immense success and continued to show for more than ten years.

In 2001, the Pantages Theatre Toronto changed its name to Canon as a pledge to its most important supporter. But in the hearts of its many patrons, the place will always be known as Pantages.
