Background of GMC Hummer Vehicles

American Motors or AM was the original manufacturer of the first Hummers, more popularly known as Humvee. In 1992, the first civilian version or the H1 was introduced to the public. Later models such as H2 and H3 subsequently followed.

In 1999, AM finalized an agreement with General Motors to collaborate in the manufacturing and sales of Hummer vehicles under AM General. Assembly plants in Indiana which used to manufacture the military and H1 models currently engage in production of new variants of H2 and H3. GM took control of the Hummer brand, but the two companies retained their own identities.

Evolution of AM GMC Hummers from Military to Civilian Use

The original military version of the AM General Hummer were a far cry from today's sleeker and more elegant models. This is because the first models were used by the military to transport artillery and staff across rugged terrains. Hence, the bodies of the first Hummers were quite solid and made to resist much impact.

This same Hummer was used in later years as armored transport for cash to and from banks. The vehicle's body and mechanical efficiency protected its occupants from criminal attacks.

The H1 model which was first introduced in 1992, was the first civilian model of the Hummer. While it still looked like it had a flattened body similar to the military version, it had softer lines and features which projected a more sports-like rugged appeal. This model was very popular because of its ability to go through roughest roads and rugged terrains. It also has the ability to go through shallow water areas, which makes it perfect for safaris and other outdoor activities. However, the H1 model was later discontinued in 2006.

Later GMC Hummer Models

The AM GM H2 model followed in 2003. It had the same dimensions as the H1, but with softer lines and more luxurious features. The body is massive, as it is meant to be used like a heavy-duty truck. It is also wider than average trucks of its class to provide more stability on the road and to keep the vehicle from overturning. This model was popularly used in many action films and TV episodes.
However, as with the H1, its popularity dwindled as increasing fuel prices demanded more fuel-efficient types of vehicles. Many GM H2 models were converted into limousine versions.

In 2006, the GM Hummer H3 model was introduced. It is a more compact and fuel-efficient version combining sporty features with luxury. This new model maintained the same ability to ford across water areas as deep as two feet and traverse very rugged terrains. Yet, it can also function as a reliable family vehicle because of its safety features.

The ever-rising fuel prices have continued to be a threat to the sales potential of GMC Hummer vehicles, but there have been efforts to develop variants with higher MPG usage.
