Labor Posters are Required by Law

The US Department of Labor has required that all companies post copies of standard labor laws within their office or building premises.

There are several types of labor posters, each one stating or summarizing specific provisions in the labor code. The type of poster you place in your company's premises depends largely on what industry your company belongs to and which state you are operating in.

Types of Labor Posters

Some federal labor law posters are mandatory for some types of organizations, and must be placed in a conspicuous area in the workplace, especially in the human resources department or at main corridors. Examples are provisions about job safety and health protection, and about equal employment opportunity. Any failure to post the provisions, whether intentional or not, will result in fines.

Some mandatory labor posters may only be required for a particular sector, such as the Migrant and Seasonal Agricultural Worker Protection Act.

Public sector employers like government offices and public schools, and private employers who have at least fifty employees have to put up labor posters about the Family and Medical Leave Act. The employer also needs to provide translations of the Act to employees who cannot understand English.

One particular law on Fair Labor Standards may be altered by the employer to suit the company's policies, especially about rendering overtime. And while it is not mandatory to post this act, you should make copies of it for your employees' reference. A common practice is to distribute handbooks or manuals of your company policies and regulations, which should include the labor provisions.
