Purposes of DNA Testing
Deoxyribonucleic acid, better known as DNA, is present in all living organisms. DNA acts like a blueprint of your genetic makeup, and is a storehouse of information concerning your physical and mental characteristics.
DNA has two long polymers called nucleotides which is made up of molecules. DNA contains genetic information which is readable when traces of it is copied onto a nucleic acid called RNA. This process of reading genetic codes is called transcription.
Each individual has his own unique set of DNA, just like a fingerprint. Genes are passed on from one generation to another and while they change or mutate through evolution, there are similarities in DNA structures between parents and offspring, or between two different generations.
With today's advances in technology, it is so much easier to do DNA tests just by submitting samples of hair, saliva, skin or other body tissues or excretions.
Uses of DNA Tests
Forensics make heavy use of DNA testing in order to come up with evidence against criminals. Forensic investigators will be able to identify the perpetrators by comparing a suspect's own body tissue samples with those found at the crime scene. Just like fingerprints, DNA testing is practically 100% accurate and any positive match will definitely incriminate the suspect.
DNA testing can verify if two individuals are related by blood. Paternity tests are quite helpful in resolving inheritance disputes and pregnancies out of wedlock.
Scientists have also tried to use DNA testing to prove ancestry or birthright of certain populations. In genetic engineering, scientists can replicate specific DNA sequences and transform them into living organisms.
Using DNA Test Kits
You can extract your own or another person's DNA samples by using a DNA test kits. DNA test kits are readily available through various sites.
DNA test kits contain twin sets of a scraper and a sterile tube which has sterile fluid to arrest bacterial growth. You can use the scraper to extract a tissue sample, by scraping gently on the body part. The most recommended part to scrape from is your cheek lining. You then dip the tip of the brush into the tube's liquid and seal the tube. You can then send the sample back to the company for DNA testing. The sterile liquid keeps your DNA sample fresh for many months. As long as you send in the sample as soon as possible, there will be plenty of time to test your DNA sample and then get a good reading.
