Time card machines have been used by companies to keep track of the number of hours worked by employees. A time card machine, or a Bundy clock, prints the exact date and time on a time card, so the company would be able to compute the official number of hours worked by the employee.

The first time card machine ever used was built more than a hundred years ago and time card machines are still being used in some companies today. There have been advances in the time keeping technology over the past few decades. The use of software have made using time cards unnecessary. This is more convenient and efficient for the employees.

Currently, available technologies include biometrics, swipe cards or proximity magnetic cards. Biometric timekeeping systems use such things as fingerprint scanners, iris scanner or voice recognition hardware and software. Swipe cards have magnetic stripes that are recognized by a machine. The card is swiped and the exact time is recorded in a machine. Proximity cards are magnetic cards that do not require contact. Just bring the card near the reader and the machine will record the time. Others are web-based time keeping systems that involve the use of usernames and password to log-in or log-out of work.

Today's time card machines or high technology time keeping systems make it more convenient for employees to log-in or log-out of work. It also makes easier for the accounting department as time is recorded automatically and data can be accessed using software.

The time records are stored in a database. This eliminates the need for too much paper in processing payroll. It is also far more efficient than the traditional time card machines as it minimizes fraud in the workplace. An accurate time keeping system is important for any company to minimize cost and maximize the time of employees.
