Bird Friends and Bird Pests

There are at least a hundred different species of birds in both urban and rural places. Most birds are friendly to humans and even help eradicate insects in the garden. Some, like wild geese, fly in formation and are quite pleasurable to watch. Swans and ducks provide a sense of tranquility and quiet charm to ponds and lakes.

However, birds can also be pests even though most species don't attack humans. In big cities, pigeons and wild geese come in flocks and settle on roofs and penthouses to feed or breed. Unfortunately, they also leave their droppings and remnants of nests after hatching their young, and these are potential sources of deadly air-borne viruses that are harmful to humans and other animals.

In rural areas, birds also eat fruits and leaves of vegetables, resulting in damage to crops and produce. Woodpeckers bore holes in tree trunks which causes harm to the tree.

Different Methods of Bird Control

Traditional methods of controlling bird pests include shooting or hunting them down, placing poison in feeding areas, stoning and using scarecrows. Environmentalists and animal rights groups have criticized most of these methods as being cruel and even ineffective.

Due to technology, new and more environment-conscious methods have been introduced for bird control. A better scarecrow version is a movable two-sided image of a bird of prey, such as an eagle or owl. The image has light-sensitive lenses with holographic effects to make the figure more realistic and frightening to small birds.

Another safe method of bird pest control is the ultrasonic repellent, which emits a sound that humans can't hear but which is extremely audible and irritating to birds. Another good thing about the gadget is that it's irritating not only to bird pests but also to bats, rodents and stray animals. The only downside is that the sound is also audible to your own household pets and will make them uncomfortable.

Spiked strips placed on tops of fences and ledges will prevent birds from using these as landing or roosting spots.

You can use net to cover your crops and keep birds away from them. Nets also block entry into penthouse areas and open windows.

Certain bitter chemicals can be sprayed on crops to make them taste offensive. However, the chemical may also affect the taste or nutritional composition of the fruit. A special kind of gel can be sprayed on the surfaces where bird pests normally hang around to make the birds sticky.

Where to Buy Bird Pest Control Products

Many websites sell bird pest and pigeon control products. Except for the electronic repellers, most other products are usually quite reasonably priced.

You should buy the type of bird control product based on specific criteria. For instance, you will definitely not be able to use ultrasonic repellents properly when you have household pets. Or nets may be effective in warding off bird pests but are also hard to uninstall or maintain.
