What is a Tanning Bed?

Tanned skin is considered quite fashionable and desirable, especially if you are showing off your physique. It requires exposure to ultraviolet rays which help darken the skin.

The best source of ultraviolet rays is direct sunlight, which is not always available. Temperate regions of the world have only short periods of summer which is the best time to get a tan.

Tanning beds provide a great alternative for getting a tan even in the middle of winter or after sundown. A tanning bed contains 12 to 28 tubular lamps that emit about 100 watts of light, which is just the right amount of ultraviolet rays to give your body a good tan in less than half an hour.

There are now two types of tanning beds. The first is the traditional lie down type where you simple relax in the bed as ultraviolet rays touch your body parts. The second type is the stand up type where you are standing upright throughout the procedure.

Advantages of Stand Up Tanning Beds

In lie down tanning beds, you need to keep your body prone as it receives the ultraviolet rays. On the other hand, you can raise your arms or move inside stand up tanning beds.

A great advantage with stand up tanning beds is that all parts of your body get an even tan because there are no pressure points compared to lie down beds. There are even versions of stand up tanning beds where you can take a shower at the same time that you are getting the tan.

A third advantage is that stand up tanning beds use higher wattage lamps, so you tan in less time. There are also reflectors inside the stand up tanning beds to assure a better tanning quality.

Finally, stand up tanning beds are more sanitary. You don't touch any surface as you do with lie down beds, so there's no risk of disease spreading between users.

The Down Side of Stand Up Tanning Beds

Standing up while getting a tan can be tiring, especially if you've just had a busy day. This can be alleviated by moving around inside the bed. You can try stretching, exercising, and dancing to get rid of the strain and boredom during the treatment.

One misconception about stand up tanning beds is that the higher wattage lamps are harmful for your skin. Actually the risk is the same for both types of tanning beds, and even less for stand up types because you need less time for tanning. You should also use tanning salon supplies like lotions to relieve dryness and discomfort during tanning.
