The use of dial up internet declined with the popularity of DSL connection. But still internet service providers dial up connection is available during times when the DSL is not working. Dial up internet may be slow but when you really need to go online and DSL is not available, you will find that the old dial up internet access to be useful.

The fastest that dial up can go is still very slow compared to DSL. A dial up connection won't let you view videos online and downloading music could take forever. So why, you ask, are internet service providers dial up connection still available? Because they are reliable even if they're slow. They're the perfect alternative whenever there's a DSL outage.

Internet service providers dial up usually comes as a free back up connection along with the DSL plan that you purchase. You can also possibly use internet service providers dial up service when you're out of town and need to go online. Simply hook up to a phone jack and connect using a dial up connection. This will require a user name and password given by your internet service provider.

Dial up uses the same frequency as the voice signal on the telephone copper wire. That is why you can't use the phone and be online at the same time. The voice signal that is audible to the human ear is but a small portion of the entire range of frequencies available. DSL uses a different frequency range on the telephone copper wire. That is why you can use the phone and be online at that same time with DSL. The frequency used by DSL is wider that's why it has a larger bandwidth and therefore much faster than dial up.
