Today's teens influence the spending on households greatly. That is why marketing teens has been targeted by most companies. There are even TV shows that produced teen versions of their shows to acknowledge this market trend. Marketing to youth can be lucrative.

Marketing teens is attractive as this demographic segment seem to have unlimited needs and teenagers are really passionate about what they want. They can bug their parents to submission if they really really want something that bad.

A new video game, a new console, shoes, clothes, computers, the list of products teenagers want is almost unending. Some teenagers even want cars with a popular reason saying they need it to go places even if they're just still in high school.

Marketing teens can sometimes go overboard and it sometimes happens that marketers use questionable means to promote their products. Highly sexualized ads targetting teenagers, for example, is not recommendable.

The question of ethics is a recurring issue in marketing whether marketing teens or not. The buyer beware always applies. In the end, marketing a product that really doesn't satisfy what the end consumers need will be points against the marketer and the company they represent.

Teen marketing is a special case though as teenagers are often gullible and will easily believe what they think is fashionable and trendy. Oftentimes they look up to idols or heroes that they want to emulate and disregard parent's advise.

It is up to the marketers to regulate themselves lest action be taken to pass stricter laws in marketing to teens and children. In the end it would be for the good of all affected as they will avoid strict regulation and the end consumers will find responsible marketing campaigns.

The question is whether marketers will be responsible enough to promote products that they themselves will buy or let their teenage kids buy. That is the true test of a product.
