Maintaining a natural grass in your lawn is expensive and takes a lot of time. You have to pay a landscaper, install lawn irrigation system to keep the lushness of the grass, mow your yard, and even use fertilizer. With synthetic grass, however, these activities related to maintenance of your lawn will be eliminated, or at least, minimized. Artificial turf installation and maintenance are cheaper and neater, while at the same time, you are helping to conserve water.

Artificial grasses are not only used in homeowner's lawns. You can also find artificial turfs employed in stadiums, parks, and athletic fields. Despite the convenience that a synthetic grass offers, many are still not buying into the idea of replacing their natural grass with the artificial alternative. Researchers who conduct studies on artificial turf grasses have found the presence of the chemical, lead, on the products. This has raised safety concerns among consumers and environmental groups.

But majority of the companies that manufacture synthetic grasses are claiming that their products are indeed safety. To address consumer demand about products which are friendly to the environment, some companies are now using soy-based materials. But there are still others that utilize petro-based raw materials. You should watch out for these types of synthetic grasses if you are a naturalist.

There are also artificial turf products that come with antibacterial agent and porous backing. They are targeted for homeowners who raise pets and keep them outside the house. The bacterial agent helps to lessen the odor of the dog's mess.

Newer synthetic grass products do look like the real thing. They are now widely available in different shades of green. Others are mixed with brown grasses to make it appear that your synthetic lawn is real. In fact, landscape designers are beginning to utilize them.
