Before, a meeting is always a formal rendezvous that requires the participants to show up in a conference room or a restaurant function hall in a specific time. Oftentimes, the participants choose to show up ahead of time to avoid getting tardy. Now, however, meetings may be held without arranging this rendezvous. All you need is to set up a conference call.

Using the power of multi-way dialing, thanks to modern telephone and gadgetry, an executive in a far-off office may call a meeting in his offshore branch anytime, without leaving his seat.

Reservationless conferencing
The most cost-effective and popular type of conference call is called reservationless. Many people have been using this because it enables for cheap conference calls. To set up a conference call this way, you need access numbers, also called conference call numbers, for you and the participants of the meeting. The meeting host calls the number of the person to conference with, and enter the access number. The participants do the same, until everybody have joined teh conference.

Hello? Operator?
There are also operator-assisted conference call services where the conference may be recorded, broadcasted, and monitored. Many large companies use this, as this saves them from using a secretary for the minutes of the meeting and monitoring. The operator is tasked in the whole process to set up a conference call. All that the participants have to do is wait for the operator to connect them. It is a bit more expensive, however, and the conference time is limited especially if the demand for the service is high. This is a relief, though, for people who are not keen on setting up a conference call without operators.

Extra services
Many operator-assisted conference call companies also provide translation services, making it a breeze for people of different nationalities and languages to hold a meeting. Hard copies or emailed minutes of the meeting may also be furnished by operators at the clients' request.

There are also conference calling services over the web, using messenger services, that runs after the popularity of phone-in conference calls. In more sophisticated offices, software technicians handle this type of web conferencing. In simple conferences, though, knowledge of online messenger services suffice.
