More than a hundred million of computer equipment have become obsolete since the invention of personal computers. Landfills are the primary destination of computer equipment disposal. These can cause havoc to the environment. In addition to environmental factors, several reasons exist why you should recycle computer equipment.

According to experts, a single personal computer contains several materials which are harmful to the environment as well as to the person's health. Toxic gases and metals, acids, chlorinated substances and photoactive materials are some of the harmful contents of computer equipment. Although studies have been conducted that confirm adverse health impact of these substances to the human body, it is still not known how comprehensive the impact will be if these toxic materials are mixed and combined into the drinking water system. It is only right to recycle computer equipment to help prevent these toxins to be leaked into the water system.

Each state has passed appropriate measures on how to recycle computer equipment. As a responsible consumer, however, you can do your part by practicing proper computer equipment disposal. Some of the things you can do include the following:

* Contact your computer manufacturer. Some manufacturers have programs on recycling old computers. They encourage their buyers to return obsolete equipment so they can recycle computer equipment parts.

* If you know about hardware and computer parts, you can recycle computer equipment parts which are compatible with their new machine.

* Check with the government agency responsible for the environmental protection. Find list of local computer equipment disposal sites, and turn over your equipment with them.

* There may be some organizations that may be interest in using your old computer. You can donate your equipment with them.

* Find some leads on the internet for private recycling services. Or, sell your old computer via online auction. This is another way to recycle computer equipment.
