High Shear Mixing Technology Is Also Used In Construction

The production of glass-fiber reinforced concrete often requires the use of mixers before contractors spray the mixture. There are three types of mixers: high shear, rotating pan and continuous.

Current production of glass-fiber reinforced concrete (GRC) for spray-up material realizes the benefits of high shear mixing as applied to the construction industry. You produce a well-dispersed uniform mix, free from lumps, in rapid times (of about a minute) when you use a high shear mixer.

Rotating pan mixers, initially used for mixing GRC mortar before discovering the benefits of mixing with high shear, is now found in most pre-casting works. Its role is mainly in the mixing of lightweight aggregate mixes for use as core material in sandwich construction and also a means of dispersing fiber in pre-blended slurry to produce premix composites.

The principle of the continuous mixer is to provide an uninterrupted supply of mixed mortar for use by the spray pump. However, most if not all continuous mixers require the dry feed of sand and cement to be blended beforehand, prior to mixing in the water. This therefore involves a two-stage process. It is good to bear in mind that pre-blending of sand and cement requires a large capital outlay.

High shear mixing technology is not limited to the construction industry. There are food mixers that use high shear technology; high shear mixers are also widely used in pharmaceuticals, plastics, and many other industries. High shear mixers are very useful when you need to homogenize, suspend and emulsify mixtures of materials that ordinarily are difficult to combine.

The basic principle is an impeller fixed to a vertical shaft and driven by a motor. The motor power rating will vary depending on the particular use to which you will use the high shear mixer. It should be large enough to drive the shaft at desired high speeds.
