You might have wondered how those stunning pictures in glossy magazines and catalogs were taken. While photographs in magazines are the works of professionals, you can actually snap the same perfect table top photography by applying good lighting techniques.

The first thing that you may want to consider when starting your table top photography is to locate the source of your lighting. Whether you have a spotlight source, or a source which is a natural light through the window, or an overhead light source, make sure that you place the object you are going to shoot the way you want it. You may want to create a shadowy effect, or you like your object of table top photography to be highlighted.

After you have located your light source, ensure that you have the right distance between your table top displays and the light to achieve the appearance you want. You should consider not placing your light source very close to an object if it is metallic. But this can be a good way to shoot a table top Christmas tree or any object that does not absorb light. In addition to your object of table top photography, consider also the material which is used in your table top as it contributes to the overall result of your snap shots.

Depending on the mood that you want to convey, you may choose to use a flash or not use it at all. Keep in mind that the flash from your own camera contributes to the effect of table top photography. If you wish to have an effect of a darker tone, then you may want to forgo the use of the flash. A bright and sharp picture which is a product of table top photography needs the aid of the flash, however.
