Flood bulbs are high-powered lights used to flood a large indoor or outdoor area with strong artificial light. Flood bulbs are extremely useful when holding outdoor sporting matches that last from late afternoon to after sunset. Because flood bulbs are designed to provide even lighting across a large space, they are useful in many industries.

Flood bulbs are classified as high-intensity discharge lamps. This simply means that they produce a great amount of artificial light. A good example of a flood bulb is the parabolic aluminized reflector light, or the par light. It can be used to provide flat, even lighting to a large space.

If you enjoy watching or playing sports, you have a great appreciation for flood bulbs. Many of the great sporting matches of our time were played in the evening, made possible by flood lighting. Flood bulbs are placed high above the sporting zone to be illuminated, and evenly distributed to provide light to the entire field. Flood bulbs are sometimes placed above four different corners of the field, pointing towards the center. This explains why sometimes, during an evening football match, fans notice four shadows branching out from the players' feet.

Flood lights are also used for security and safety purposes. Powerful outdoor flood lights can be used during rescue operations where searches are conducted over a large area. A strong flood light constantly illuminating a large front lawn can deter thieves from entering buildings.

Floodlighting is also very useful for entertainment. For instance, some outdoor plays held at night require powerful but even lighting. Plays held in theatres also require good flood bulbs. The lights can be used with colored filters to provide different effects and change the atmosphere.

Flood bulbs are available commercially, but just keep in mind that a light that powerful consumes plenty of electricity. You may feel safe with a powerful flood bulb illuminating your entire lawn, but be prepared to see a spike in your power consumption.
