Ways to Store Excess Files

Typically, your desktop or laptop computer can store between 40 to 160 gigabytes of files, videos or images. But there may come a point where your hard drive becomes too full to store additional data. Some files are no longer active, but you are not willing to delete them either.

In such cases, you should use a separate drive. These hard drives can come in different sizes, shapes and mode of use. Most are easily connected to your computer through a USB cable. The most portable version is the miniature flash drive that you can carry around in your purse or even wear around your neck on a chain or tag.

On the other hand, these are physical objects and can therefore be subject to damage or loss. And when the drive gets damaged or lost, you lose all the data that you have stored in it.

Advantages of Using Online Drives

This is where online drives are useful. Online drives are accessible only through the internet, so you can be sure that they will not be subject to damage or loss. You need to create an account which is password-protected on a reliable site. Then you can start uploading your hard drive files. Most online hard drives provide anywhere from two to four gigabytes of storage space for all types of documents, large or small. You can store your text files, photos, and even videos as long as you don't exceed the allowed space.

As long as you always remember your log in name and your password, you can access your online drive anytime. Reputable sites are also protected from harmful viruses as the files are automatically scanned before being uploaded.

The Down Side of Using Online Drives

On the other hand, you can access an online drive only if you have an internet connection. You are also subject to the terms and conditions set by the site. There may be times when the site may be down and inaccessible, or unusually slow in saving or updating.

There have been cases of sites that have closed down. In such cases, you will need to retrieve your files and save them under another drive. Some people may feel uneasy about using online sites to store confidential data, as there may be very remote chances that the stored files could be accessed by unauthorized parties.

Strategies for Efficient Use of Online Drives

Deal only with reliable sites. Get recommendations from trusted people about which sites are best. Keep informed about updates, especially when the site can't be accessed due to maintenance.

Store only files that are non-confidential in nature. It may also be best to use different online drives or accounts since that each one has only limited space. Keep a personal log of where you have stored your files as well so that you can find them easily.
